Every once in a while I’ve got to blog a gift card feel-good story. In Indiana, the Worth County Development Authority is offering students in the county a $75.00 gift card to help with pricey back to school expenses. The non-profit organization is donating more than 1,300 gift cards, that’s more than $100,000 worth. Back to school can be a stressful and expensive time for families; it’s nice to see this creative use of gift cards. Watch the video below:

DPS offers gift cards to encourage parental involvement Detroit Public Schools officials will give a $25 Target gift card to the first 500 parents who sign up for the "I'm In" parent involvement card as a way to encourage parents to become more involved in the Detroit schools. The card will be used to track parent engagement and workshops in the district's eight parent resource centers. Every time parents use their card, they will receive points that will earn them entries into raffles and prizes. This isn't the first time DPS has used Target gift cards to encourage parental involvement. Last September, the district offered $20,000 in Target gift cards — including five $1,000 prizes — to parents who brought their children for a full day on Count Day, when attendance figures are used to determine state funding levels. At Lucy Wortham James Elementary in St. James Missouri students are not just encouraged to have a perfect attendance record, they are rewarded. Every student with a perfect attendance record at the end of each month is entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate sponsored by a local business. This shows how prevalent incentive programs, and gift card rewards are becoming, even for kids. Teaching kids the importance of punctuality, and positive work ethic is important. Gift cards also allow for a sense of independence as the kids can ultimately pick out their own reward.
