Gift Cards Shift to Digital

Written by Deborah Merkin | 02/28/2014

According to a newly released InComm study of prepaid gift card buying during the 2013 holiday season, gift card buying trends are falling in line with the rest of the retail industry: they are going digital. During December 2013, 57% of consumers purchased digital prepaid cards, while only 43% purchased physical cards. The ability for consumers to do last-minute shopping without fighting crowds at malls or worrying about empty store shelves made digital prepaid cards an easy, convenient and low-risk options for holiday shoppers. These trends, combined with the merchant adoption they demand make digital gift cards an attractive option for employers to use in employee engagement programs. Being able to deliver gift cards to employees instantly upon completion of a big project or a particular job well done is beneficial for the employer to deliver in a timely manner, giving employees instant gratification.
